Goodbye Wall

During my childhood in America I was afraid of the German-German wall. The concept was terrible and the central idea was that families were being torn apart. In 1979 as a U.S. soldier in the Cold War I was able to visit East Berlin. I was afraid again as I was crossing the border on the bus. But the people we met that day were no different than us. Years later I was hired as editor for the monthly newspaper of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Nuremberg, which guarded a more than 700-kilometer-long border with the Eastern Bloc. And again I was standing right at The Wall. On November 8, 1989 I received a call from Headquarters in Nuremberg that the fall of The Wall had begun and that I should come to Schirnding on the Czech border to report. So my photo essay documents the history of this wall from the Cold War to its opening, with pictures from the other side, of a Russian commander in Bavaria, to a celebration of the fall of The Wall in 1990 at Mödlareuth. This was a new reality for all of us.
