An(Ge)sichtssache

Für „An(Ge)sichtssache“ macht sich Lena Mayer erstmals selbst zum Bildgegenstand und setzt sich mit den (Un-)Möglichkeiten und (Un-)Wirklichkeiten der Selbstdarstellung auseinander. Um sich den verschiedenen Realitäten ihres Antlitzes auszusetzen, sich mit der „Bildmanipulation“ der Modebranche zu konfrontieren, bedurfte es eines Profis. So entstand die Fotoserie in Kollaboration mit dem Friseurmeister und Visagisten Josef Bauer. Die spannende Dynamik hierbei liegt in der Gegenläufigkeit der gewohnten Tätigkeiten der Akteure. Die Fotografin wird selbst zum Motiv, angreifbaren „Bild“ und verletzlichen Selbstexperiment – der Visagist, ohne zweckgebundenen Auftrag, tobt sich aus bis hin zur Persiflage des „Schönen“. Damit erfüllt sich ihr Konzept vom „kontrollierten Kontrollverlust“. Die dargestellte Wirklichkeit erscheint als eine kaum zu belegende Vorstellung – eine Falle der Echtheit.

For "An(Ge)sichtssache", Lena Mayer makes herself the subject of the picture for the first time and deals with the (im)possibilities and (un)realities of self representation. A professional was needed in order to suspend the different realities of her face to confront the „image manipulation“ of the fashion industry. Thus the photo series was created in collaboration with the hairdresser and make-up artist Josef Bauer. The exciting dynamic here lies in the contrasting nature of the players‘ habitual activities. The photographer herself becomes a motif, an attackable "image" and a vulnerable self-experiment. The make-up artist, without a specific assignment, goes wild, leading to a parody of the "beautiful". Her concept of the "controlled loss of control" is thus fulfilled. The depicted reality appears as a barely provable idea - a trap of authenticity.
